The Day of the Doctor

Not a Spoiler Free Post.

I haven't been a Doctor Who fan for very long. Definitely not as long as some, and you can partly blame this on me not being born fifty years ago, and partly because it took me until I was nineteen to start watching it. When I did though, I fell completely in love with it and have been religiously watching it ever since. I also recently finished watching Christopher Eccleston as Nine, and have begun watching David Tennant's first series.
Yesterday morning I woke bright and early at 6:45, just in time to make a cup of tea before watching the 50th Anniversary Episode 'The Day of the Doctor'.
I'll tell you right now that I loved the episode. I was a little bit worried about the Doctor going back and changing the fact that he killed all the Time Lords, and I keep changing my mind about it. It just seems like something he would always carry, and now it could be gone. At the moment though I am happy that he's happy.
I also liked Clara in this episode more than I ever had before. I have to admit that I haven't been quite so taken with Clara. Perhaps I'm sore from losing Amy, but I just haven't been enjoying the show as much since Amy and Rory left. I still watch the episodes, because Eleven is my Doctor and I will forever and always love the show, no matter who is on it. I think I enjoyed this episode more because now the Doctor's "figured out" who she is, they can just go on adventures without her being a problem that he has to solve.
I loved how they put Billie Piper as Rose in the episode. I'm glad she wasn't actually Rose, because I feel like that would have ruined it. I wish though, that when Ten had asked "what Bad Wolf girl?" that John Hurt's Doctor had answered him. It just didn't seem plausible that Ten didn't care that he hadn't got an answer and was fine with not knowing if she was there or not.

What I really loved about the 50th Anniversary were all the other things that they also did to celebrate. My absolute favourite thing was Paul McGann's (the Eight Doctor) mini-episode 'The Night of the Doctor' which if you haven't watched yet, it's amazing and you should go now. I also loved the 'The Five(ish) Doctors Reboot' which has some amazing guest cameos (I would say who but I don't want to give the surprise away!). Even though I haven't seen any episodes from the Classic-Who era, this was still such a hilarious watch. I did have a little background information, which does help but still great even if you don't know anything about this era. One other amazing thing was the one-off episode 'An Adventure in Space and Time' written by Mark Gatiss and starring David Bradley (Argus Filch in Harry Potter). It's all about the story behind the first Doctor and how the show came about. It was a really good, interesting watch and a must-see if you're a big fan of the show.
I am so pleased that they celebrated the anniversary properly, with something for everyone.

Did you enjoy The Day of the Doctor? Let me know in the comments!

Catch Up

Happy Easter!

It's actually only just the start of this Easter long weekend, which I am so happy about. I'm using the weekend to catch up a little on all the uni things I've sort of fallen behind on and to hopefully watch a few more movies I've been meaning to see for a while. Today my plan was to finish my essay on Egyptian shabti figures, but that didn't really work out, unless I somehow manage to write another 600 words before I go to bed and it's already midnight (read: unlikely).

Instead, however, I've had a lovely day and I shouldn't be complaining that I didn't get my essay done. My family and I went out for lunch near the beach and I ate way too much (which is pretty much my story for the whole day). For desert my brother and I shared a Snickers cake, which the whole time I was wishing that we weren't sharing and that I had my own slice, or even my own cake of.

When we came home I tried to work on my essay but instead I watched Moonrise Kingdom, which I will hopefully be reviewing sometime soon (let me try finish this essay first!). Then dinner, which was takeaways and I finished that off with a whole packet of Cadbury Marshmallow Eggs and a bowl of Rocky Road ice cream while watching Argo (which I will also get around to reviewing someday soon).

This week has been pretty up and down for me. Work was absolutely shitty for a couple of days and it totally drained me. I only got to the gym once this week, but managed to get out for a run one night. I've been eating okay, thankfully, if you don't count todays overload! The gym was closed today, but open tomorrow so I might go in the morning and hopefully work off some of these marshmallow eggs. I have a hieroglyphs test on Wednesday and my essay on shabti's is due on Thursday so I doubt if I'll get back on here before then.

That said, however, this week is the return of two of my favourite television shows in the entire world. Tomorrow is Doctor Who and Monday is Game of Thrones. So if I'm so inspired I might have to come on here and type a review straight away. To be honest with you guys though, I haven't really be excited for either of them. I know, I know, I just said they were my favourite in the world, but both shows just took away my favourites too. I loved Amelia and Rory Pond. And I loved Renly, the one and true King on the Iron Throne. I just wasn't looking forward to either of them in the same way that I usually am. I do know, however, in my heart of hearts that it's going to be okay, and that I'll watch them and wonder what the hell I was so worried about. Photos of Margaery are helping to put my heart back together after Renly broke it, and the beautiful creations like the one made by the talented oswiny are helping to heal the wounds that Amy left.

So guys, have a happy long weekend! Enjoy watching the new shows that are coming out this week and don't forget to tell me what you think!

Star Trek

Okay, so I have a confession to make: I never would have seen Star Trek if Benedict Cumberbatch hadn't been in the sequel. It's my life mission to see all of BC's movies, and so he sort of forced my hand with appearing as the villain of it's sequel Star Trek: Into Darkness, didn't he?

I tend to do this with a lot of things in my life, not just films and television. I'll judge something massively before I've even had a chance to look into it. One of my friends recently observed that everything in my eyes was guilty until proven innocent. I have to stop doing that. One example (that does happen to be a television series) is that I used to HATE (see how I've not only capitalised it but also underlined and bolded it?) Doctor Who. I had an argument with one of my friends boyfriends over it when I was seventeen. He had just unsuspectingly stated that he enjoyed watching it, totally unaware that he'd walked into a minefield. How could he? How dare he? He couldn't understand how I could judge something so hard without having seen an episode. I couldn't understand how he could be such a dickhead as to watch a stupid sci-fi show about some crazy doctor in space.
Now it's not only one of my favourite shows on television, but my actual favourite show of all time.
Harry, if you're reading this, I'm sorry.

That's not to say Star Trek is now my favourite movie of all time. However, it's definitely changed my opinion. I found it fast-paced, funny and was perfect for someone with absolutely no understanding of the Star Trek world/universe. Chris Pine worked well as James Kirk, although I feel he always plays the same characters. The last movie I saw him in, This Means War (2012), he played FDR, a secret agent who is pretty much Kirk with a different name. That same confident intelligence, self assured, always on the lookout, good looking guy who is charming with the ladies but still has something to prove. I love Zachary Quinto as Spock. It would be hard to play someone who is meant to have show no emotions, but actually does feel a lot beneath the surface. I think he pulled it off wonderfully, and I want to see him in more films soon. I also love it when films have a great minor cast too. Hello Chris Hemsworth, Winona Ryder and Simon Pegg. If I hadn't IMDB'd the movie before I saw it, I never would have known Nero was played by Eric Banner, but it was great to see him too. My biggest love casting wise was Leonard Nimoy as the future, older Spock. I'm sure all of you know this already but Nimoy was the first Spock and I think it's a perfect nod to the original. Nimoy also plays William Bell in Fringe (2009), and anyone in Fringe is loved by me.

Star Trek: Into Darkness is due in Australian cinemas on the 16th of May. Will you be seeing it? Is there a movie or television series you've judged before watching it?
